In discussions with Clinique, Barrera said authenticity was paramount. "Even though I have these memories of my mom and grandmother using the creams and coming back to them over and over again, I'm just discovering the brand," says Barrera, adding that it's important for her to know the products she's promoting to actually use. "I feel like we're being lied to out there all the time," she says of marketing in the saturated beauty world. "So I said to myself, OK, I'm going to try all the products and see if they work - and what works for me - so I can be sure I'm being honest with people."
Her favorites so far are the Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, and the Even Better Makeup. In her everyday life away from the camera, Barrera is a minimalist. "There's a really good lip balm that I always have in my bag — I even keep it in my backpack," she says, unzipping it and digging for evidence. "Oh, here it is!" she laughs, reading the label. "'Moisture Surge Lip Hydro-Plump Treatment.' It sounds like an ad, but I really don't go anywhere without it."
When I ask her if she feels like a magnet in the midst of a spiral of possibility, Barrera reveals that she believes in the law of attraction. "I believe in bringing things into existence through thought and will, while of course putting in the necessary work," she says. "Even though it's been ten years, I don't feel like I'm in the middle of anything, I weirdly feel like my life is literally just beginning."
