El Capitan-Climb through the 1000-meter granite wall

All routes are considered very difficult in alpinist circles.The best -known tour leads over the south edge: "The Nose" was first started by Warren Harding, Wayne Merry and George Whitmore in 47 climbing days in 1958, with great use of technical aids such as boring hooks and stepders.

From the end of the 1970s, a kind of countermovement was created on the flanks of the mountain: free climbing, a new philosophy of climbing.Rope and hooks are only allowed to serve the fuse - and no longer as a help in the rock.Without technical help, "The Nose" was first conquered by the climbing Lynn Hill in 1993.

One climbing record chases the next

For decades, the best among the climbers on this mountain with its iron -proof granite walls.Including the brothers Alexander and Thomas Huber from Germany, who set up a speed record.For the Zodiac route, for which three days are normally estimated with bivouac in hammocks, the Huber brothers needed only an hour and 51 minutes in 2004.

The speed record for the south edge is currently two hours and 32 minutes, but using fixed ropes and step ladders.When the "Huberbuam" was on this route in 2006, she filmed the director Pepe Danquart - for the award -winning documentary "Am Limit".

Recently, a three -way class climbed with special luggage over the south edge to the summit.They had two eight kilogram camera bags with them to document the route with 360-degree images.
