Johannes Oerding (39) celebrates on 7.October his premiere as a coach of "The Voice of Germany".In an interview with the news agency Spot on News, the singer reveals why he was rightly excited at the beginning why coach colleague Sarah Connor (41) is his biggest competitor and what his partner Ina Müller (56) said about his new job.
How did you experience your entry into "The Voice of Germany"?
Johannes Oerding: I was very excited and rightly so.A lot happens here, the spots are going on and new impressions are waiting at all corners. This is initially a stimulus overflowing, but I was slowly looking into the task and also got support from the other coaches when you had any questions.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of "The Voice" as a newcomer to coach?
Oerding: The disadvantage is of course that the talents do not yet know you from the "The Voice" cosmos. Then it may be that you are more likely to go to someone like Mark Forster, whom you have seen on TV for many years and know how he ticks. But: You also saw that Mark Forster has never won.(laughs) Some talents might say: I go to Oerding, it is fresh, he has vigor and it is in the mood for.
Is there a disadvantage that you make music in German, but want to sing many talents in English?
Oerding: Yes, it is noticeable that the talents are thinking of whom they go to.Anyone who wants to start internationally goes to Nico Santos because they stand for that.Singers who like R'n'B and Soul seem to be drawn to a Sarah Connor because she has proven that she has a great expertise there. For me come to me people who like to sing in German who already write their own songs themselves, play the instruments, which are really already a bit of artists.I think that's pretty nice that I already have such an experienced group.
Who do you see as the strongest competitor among the coaches?
Oerding: I think for all of us is the greatest competition Sarah Connor because she has the strongest vocal team. There are really many, many big voices.Where such a voice is almost sufficient to win too.But I always say to my team: We may not have the big Mariah Carey votes among us, but we have personality, authenticity, character and experience. That is what matters here and ultimately arrives at the audience.
After a positive Corona test, Sarah Connor could only be virtually at the Battles. How did you find out about the test result?
Oerding: I had looked at my plan and was surprised that Sarah didn't have to compete that day.We were then informed and explained that you are already working on solutions. Then she made a very strong and fit impression on me from the home office again.
How else did you experience the shoots under Corona conditions?
Oerding: In the meantime I have got used to the productions where you are tested every day, where you may have to quarantine for three to four days beforehand so that everything really runs round. It has now also learned from us in the event industry that this is a little evil that simply belongs every morning. It is all the more sad when there is something like Sarah. It didn't happen to her, but outside, but outside. You don't have it under control.
How was it for you to listen to the voices on the red chair?
Oerding: Very unusual because the visual level has played a major role for me so far during appearances.I also believe that this is part of the overall picture of an artistic performance, because this creates completely different options and serves completely different levels.Nevertheless, I found the experience funny - how often we have looked at questioningly: is that a woman? Is it a man?Is it a child? How many are they? You really have to sensitize your own hearing in order to listen to the subtleties and that certain something.Preferences are also developed, I liked very much if someone sang in German and there was credibly brought over there, what they sang.I was there relatively quickly and often with me.There was also someone who sang a song from me and I wish he had sung him a little better. As a coach I had to stay honest and objective.
It's a shame about the format that the winners often don't get started after their victory...
Oerding: I think even if you go out here as a winner or just as someone who flies out halfway: From then on everything is possible, everything is possible. This does not always have something to do with the television show, but with your own character and your own drive, how and whether you want to continue or whether you meet with the right people afterwards. There were people who were at the start for a while, maybe even are still. It is exciting that these were not just winners, but also ex-talents like Michael Schulte or Max Giesinger. What the show can deliver to everyone is that you can learn a lot here, take a lot with you and be inspired.
Last year the anniversary relay was filled with a few double chairs.Would you also have wanted a coach partner next to you?
Oerding: On the contrary, I wanted to sit alone (laughs). It was a bit too much action for me in the past season. With four people it is now a bit tidier again. If I didn't have the choice, there would already be people with whom I would like to take a seat. For example, Wincent knows that I like to spend my time with it and always have fun with him.It is quickly in the pear and is quick.Together we can also be quite provocative.(laughs)
What did your partner Ina Müller say about her new job?
Oerding: We always share these moments together. If something new arises and happens, we are fans of each other and support each other.Just like me, she is a bit proud that you have made it so far that you are asked and can be there on such a show.Sometimes you can no longer notice what has happened in recent years.I still think I'm 14 and play in a school band.
How is it for you to be able to stand on stage again through Corona loosening?
Oerding: At my previous shows everything was there: beach chair or picnic concerts, seated concerts, model experiments with many thousands of people, with mask and without mask, 3G, 2G...All concepts had something for themselves, but the most beautiful were where you really see people and they can stand together and take part in a bit.But it's not all as it was. That is still sad and a shame. We all fever that someone says at some point: fits people, everything is like before.
Her sixth album "Contours" recently got platinum. Are there plans for new songs or a new album?
Oerding: This is something that unfortunately falls over the back because of the live shows and TV work.I often forget to sit down and write down things. But at some point I have to find the beginning. There are one, two or three ideas. And I know myself when I wrote the first song and find it good, then the machine gets rolling - slowly like an old steam locomotive, but at least.
