It's only a small region in Hesse, but it still boasts numerous sights, cultural sites and an enchanting landscape: The Rheingau is a true pleasure region. Because in addition to the world-famous wine, cultural events also make it something special.
Many people associate the Rheingau with its importance as a wine region. The region is particularly well-known for its Riesling, which is grown on around 80 percent of the vineyards. Castles, palaces, churches and monasteries also bustle about in the smallest of spaces. Churches worth seeing include the Heilig Kreuz parish church in Geisenheim, known as the "Rheingau Cathedral", the Eibingen monastery in Rüdesheim am Rhein and the Eberbach monastery in Eltville am Rhein. The two cities of Rüdesheim and Eltville am Rhein as well as Idstein are also worth a trip for the respective old town.
Enjoyable hours at the Rheingau Music Festival
In addition to wine festivals and gourmet weeks, the area also has another treat to offer: the Rheingau Music Festival. From June 26th to September 5th, more than 200 concerts will take place in the entire region from Frankfurt via Wiesbaden to the Middle Rhine Valley. After the festival could only take place digitally last year, it will be held with an audience again this year.
Some of the highlights of the music event can be experienced over the weekend from July 30th to August 1st: The renowned Chamber Orchestra of Europe will play works from the Romantic, Viennese Classic and Baroque eras with soloists from the Kronberg Academy. Star violinist Bomsori Kim (31) can also be heard playing the violin concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Anyone who cannot be present at the feast for the ears also has the opportunity to experience the concerts in the live stream: Telekom is showing the highlight weekend free of charge on MagentaMusik360 and on the station #dabeiTV on MagentaTV.
Palaces, castles, cycling and hiking trails
If you are interested in castles and viticulture in addition to culture, we recommend a visit to Schloss Johannisberg: It is considered the first Riesling winery in the world, since the year 817 - and to this day - wine has been grown on the Johannisberg. Also the baroque Biebricher Schloss in Wiesbaden is worth a trip. The landscape in the Rheingau also has a number of castles to offer, such as the Electoral Castle and Crass Castle in Eltville am Rhein. The world-famous Niederwald monument in the form of Germania is also located in the Rheingau. From the monument you have a fantastic view as far as Rhineland-Palatinate.
Hikers and cyclists also get their money's worth: For example, you can walk a few stages of the Rheinsteig, the Rheingauer Klostersteig and the Whispertrails. Cycle routes in the Rheingau include the Querrhein cycle tour, the Rheingau Riesling routes and the circular route of the Rhein-Main regional park. In addition to pleasure trips, the Rheingau also invites you to active holidays.
