Our experience with waterproof jewellery: is it worth the money?
What is waterproof jewellery?
Had until now we have the choice between cheap fashion jewelry that quickly loses color and rubs off or expensive jewelry that lasts a long time. Now there's an option in between: waterproof jewelry. It is usually made of stainless steel or aluminum. The pieces of jewelry are gold-plated. To make them extra durable, some of them get a layer of PVC.
How does waterproof jewelry work?
Of course, waterproof jewelry doesn't survive everything. However, the jewels promise a lot. Many of them are anti-allergenic due to their coating, they should not rub off and of course be waterproof. However, you should not wear them too often in the shower or in the swimming pool, as substances such as chlorine or soap attack the coating.
Waterproof jewelry by HeyHarper, ICrush & Nuoli: Our experiences
Our editors tested rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings from the brands Heyharper, ICRUSH and Nuoli. Unfortunately, the well-known Instagram brand Purelei did not provide us with any models for testing. We wore the jewelry for several days and left it on while showering, swimming, sleeping and washing our hands. This is what they say about the jewelry from the brands:
This is what our editors think about ICRUSH
The ICRUSH brand offers one of the largest selection options. They use 925 sterling silver and 316 L stainless steel for the jewelry. Depending on the model, the material is then gilded with 18K. This is our conclusion about the pieces of jewelry:
"These earrings are super cute and perfect for anyone with multiple pierced ears. I only have one myself, so they are very inconspicuous. You can actually wear them with everything. However, this is because the color does not quite match the photos: the earrings are more old gold than yellow gold. As a customer, I would probably be a bit disappointed here. The clasp latches in well and looks high quality, so that it does not open at the slightest touch. Thanks to the stainless steel and the gold plating, my earlobes didn't show any allergic reactions and the earrings were very comfortable to wear. I've worn them several times in the shower and bath and so far they're still like the first day."
"The gold chain consists of large chain links. It has a round clasp that you close with a rod. The clasp holds very well.
I've been wearing the necklace day and night for the past two weeks, I use it to shower and even to do sports. The color has not changed. So she scores across the board.”
"The simple gold chain and bracelet may not be big eye-catchers, but that's exactly their strength. The yellow gold also goes well with many other shades. They are perfect for layering looks.
I haven't noticed any major changes from showering or wearing. My only complaint about the set is the length and clasp of the bracelet. ICRUSH bracelets tend to be very small. The clasp can also be small and impractical.”
Hey Harper: That's what we think of the popular brand
Hey Harper is one of the most popular brands in waterproof jewelry. Especially on Instagram you can find a lot of advertising for the Dutch brand. This is what our editors think about the brand:
"The Bermuda necklace is super finely crafted and I liked it straight away - especially since I was missing a model in my endless collection of necklaces. I've been wearing them every day for about three weeks, not only to test them, but also because I've come to love them.
I'm even happier that it withstood the shower test and still shines like new. Although my partner laughed at me a bit when I stood in front of him naked with the chain, because in his words I looked like "a pubescent teenager with a gold chain". However, I don't let these funny words unsettle me and I hope that I will have something of this piece for a very long time."
Our editor Lisa also tested the HeyHarper ring.
"I love wearing rings. They give every outfit the finishing touch and make manicured fingers look incredibly elegant. I've certainly owned hundreds of rings in my life - although I left half of them in other people's bathrooms because I had to take them off when washing my hands. And the other half I was able to cut away after a short time because they always discolored and left blue-green fingers.
Investing in a more expensive ring was never an option for me - until today. The ring by heyharper taught me better. I've been wearing it every day for three weeks now, leave it on every time I wash my hands and it's even been there when I wash my hair in the shower. Conclusion: The pieces of jewelery convince even muffle
