In a job interview, with new colleagues, in love First impressions: Why looks count after all

In job interviews, with the new team or with customers: there are many encounters in life. The first impression you have on your counterpart should not be underestimated. This is also shown by a current study by Lenstore, online retailer for contact lenses, in which 1,000 Germans were questioned on the subject.

Accordingly, more than 70 percent agree that first impressions count - this is especially true when meeting someone romantically. In addition, more than half of people trust their first impressions and also say that they are usually correct. Appearance plays a role for many people: almost half of those surveyed admit that they tend to rate their counterpart positively if they find the person attractive.

First impression: What doesn't go down well at the job interview?

First impressions are particularly important in the professional world. This is especially true in job interviews. Some things can stand out here rather negatively. For most respondents (28 percent), people appear unreliable if they avoid eye contact in job interviews. A bad body odor is also not well received by 24 percent. And if you don't smile, you make a bad impression on 22 percent of those surveyed.

The top three things that, conversely, ensure a good first impression at a job interview: For 42 percent of those surveyed, this is good hygiene and no body odor. This is followed by appearance (39 percent) and clothing or style (24 percent).

Those who smile a lot and maintain eye contact come across as trustworthy

Other factors can apparently influence the perception of the other person in a very targeted manner. According to 25 percent of respondents, people who wear glasses appear particularly intelligent. Poor posture, on the other hand, reduces the impression that a person is perceived as intelligent. According to the survey participants, people who smile frequently and make a lot of eye contact appear particularly trustworthy. Both of these factors also have the most impact on how confident a person is perceived.
