Facebook users will soon be able to design their avatar even more precisely. In addition, the online figures now also have their place on Instagram. With this, the company is taking further precautions for the Metaverse.
Avatars are taking over social media. The online incarnations, previously reserved for computer games, are gradually taking their place in the world of Snapchat, TikTok, Meta and Co. We've known Bitmojis on Snapchat for a while, and the characters keep getting updates. According to some experts, TikTok is also currently experimenting with the introduction of avatars – Meta also wants to be in no way inferior. The company updates the creation process for 3D avatars on Facebook and brings the avatars to Instagram.
In a blog post, Meta announces that 3D avatars now have a wider range of facial features available. In addition, auxiliary devices such as wheelchairs have been added and they are working together with the NFL for the upcoming Superbowl and are providing matching jerseys for the respective teams:
Avatars as digital selves - with meta as creator
The new 3D avatars are now being rolled out for Facebook and Facebook Messenger. The characters will also appear in Instagram Stories and Direct Messages for the first time. Initially, however, only for users in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
explains Meta in the blog post. Because of course the avatars should not only appear in stories and stickers, but also serve as representation in the metaverse. Accordingly, the avatars can also be used in VR experiences. Here, users have the option of designing their avatar differently for each platform. That means they can appear differently in Messenger than on Instagram or in VR. For one thing, the introduction of Creation Tools means that the avatar of the user they identify with online is strongly associated with meta. After all, the avatar was created there.
Shopping for the avatar
On the other hand, the avatars result in interesting branded deals, for example with clothing companies or on the occasion of certain events, such as the jerseys for the Super Bowl. It is already becoming more and more normal for users to purchase online assets, including so-called skins for their avatars. If plots of land are already being sold in the Metaverse, it is only a matter of time before the designers' collections find their place in the virtual world. After all, initial attempts in this direction have been around for years.
